319 Construction of Pit Latrines for a Primary School , Uganda

St.Charles Lwanga Mixed Primary School accommodates over 600 pupils.Three years ago.the girls' toilet block collapsed as it was nearly filled. This gave way to sharing of the remaining toilet facilities amongst the boys. girls, teachers andsupport staff.Only four stances are available! Thlis is quite risky. given the fact liiMl iliese pupils are growing into adolescents, As toilets are shared amongst boys and girls, unwanted sexual practices may crop up.leading to sexual transmitted diseases like AIDS and unwanted pregnancies. With adequate toilet facilities, there would be improved personal hygiene and safer education of children.

244 Water pipeline to an orphanage, Tanzania

The Tumaini Orphanage outside Bukoba houses 200 orphan girls.  Because of lack of available water children are sent several times a day to take water from a nearby river.  The water is not clean.  This project wlll tie the orphanage into the main clean water source in Bukoba, and the water will be piped in.

Rotarians in Bukoba will play an active role in not only helping to finance the pipeline but by actively digging the trench for the pipeline.

The Rotary Club of Calgary funded $5300 of this project and is the only outside international source of funding for it.

Funds were sent to the project in early July 2008

245 TRACC 2009 - Taking Rotary Assistance to Communities and Children, Uganda

This is a second project in southern Uganda sponsored by RC of Calgary to assist AIDs orphans and to provide micro-credit assistance to HIV/AIDS affected or infected adults.  This project will build on the success of the initial project which is now complete as of May 1, 2009. The project is expected to be about 3 times larger, adding many more orphans  to the program as well as adults who need micro-credit assistance.  A component of providing malaria nets will also be included.

This project is intended to get underway in October 2009 and extend for 3 years.  The number one objective is to achieve sustainable lives for those directly involved by educating them, teaching them skills in vocations and through micro-credit helping adults build small businesses or farm operations.

A theme running through the entire project is health - getting tested; getting and staying on ARVs if infected.

The Rotary clubs in the Host country are RCs of Masaka, Kaliziso, and Kyotera.

As well as funds from RC of Calgary, funds for this project will be sought from The Rotary Foundation and Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development.  Other sources - clubs in Uganda, individual donations, possibly other clubs in Alberta.

241 Purchase of Ultrasound Machine for Lifeline Malawi Association,

Lifeline Malawi is progression on developing Maternal and Child programs at both its clinics, in Ngodzi and at Kasese. Currently all evaluation is done by the staff on clinic basis only. Although skilled, the lack of U/S equipment severely limits to staffs ability to evaluate complicated cases. It is anticipated that with their catchement areas, each clinic will have about five hundred births a year to manage and deliver.

The equipment being purchased is a digital Phillips Ultramark 400C system . The price of the equipment is $35,000.

The Chinook club is committing $10,000, with $10,000 matched by Wild Rose, we will be seeking $15,000 from other clubs or sources.

The equipment will be operated by Lifeline Malawi, with whom we have been associated in several projects. Interested clubs may visit their excellent web site at www.lifelinemalawi.com.

320 Lifeline Malawi minivan, Malawi

The funds will be used to purchase a mini van for transport of staff  and volunteers. LM presently uses their ambulances to pick up and transport both staff as well as volunteers. This is an inefficient use of a very expensive vehicle and not what an ambulance was meant for. However without alternative transport, people cannot be transported. With a mini van, the ambulances will be dedicated for their primary purpose. The ambulances are also very costly on fuel as well as to maintain as they are 4x4 vehicles costing in excess of $65,000 US. For long haul transport they are also not safe for passengers in the rear, who must sit sideways.

LM holds HIV/AIDS dramas in rural remote villages twice a week to influence behavioral change. Volunteer young people (12) and LM staff, who are used for this program, are presently transported in the ambulance. LM also has volunteer teams, mostly from Canada, who come and help the people in Malawi with funding, construction help, training LM staff and medical assistance (doctors/nurses).  These volunteers require transport to and from the airport (1 1/2 hours away from the clinic) as well as during the typical two weeks they are in Malawi. In 2010 transportation of Canadian volunteers could require over 15 weeks use of a vehicle alone which now requires the ambulance.

With reduced use of the ambulances for transporting people costs will be saved in fuel as ambulances use more fuel per 100 km. than a van, maintenance and longer vehicle life. Costs saved will be used towards the purchase of much needed medicines as well as improved patient health care.

283 HELPING WAYUU CHILDREN ATTEND SCHOOL, Colombia

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ASSIST THE CHILDREN OF THE WAYUU (ARAWAKAN) PEOPLE TO ATTEND SCHOOL.  AT THE PRESENT TIME MORE THAN 66% OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE HAD NO FORMAL EDUCATION.  MANY CHILDREN WHO WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL MUST WALK LONG DISTANCES BAREFOOT AND THIS REQUIRES THEM TO LEAVE HOME VERY EARLY IN THE DAY AND RETURN LATE.  THE LONG WALK FROM THEIR DISPERSED HOMES TO THE SCHOOL LOCATION RESULTS IN FOOT PARASITES AND MALNUTRITION (they often must leave home before dawn). SHOES AND BICYCLES PROVIDED BY THIS PROGRAM WILL ALLEVIATE THESE PROBLEMS.

239 Keep Kids in school beyond age 12, Mexico

We started the program 3 years ago and basically we bring money to keep chldren in school after the age of 12 or grade six. The first year just Calgary North sent $US 2500; and then the next year three Rotary Clubs from our Distirct: Calgary North, Calgary Heritage Park and Calgary Millenium contributed $7500, which was matched with a grant of $7500 from Wild Rose Foundation to keep 54 children in school, supply backpacks and school supplies for these kids. Grades must be at least85%. Partner Club is the Rotary Club of Puerto Vallarta Sur.

We also bring supplies for the kids at the town dump, like toiletries, clothing, school supplies, tooth paste and tooth brushes, etc. We have applied for Wild Rose Foundation this year and hope to do support 90 children this year.

197 Flush-Out Latrine Complex, India

This project will provide a flush-out latrine complex for use by the 600 residents of Chinnakulan, a poor area of Sivakasi, India. The people who live in this area currently use a nearby pond as a latrine. In order to improve the basic hygiene of this area and its residents, the Rotary Club of Sivakasi proposes to construct a flush-out latrine complex with a septic tank. The cost of this project is about US$15,300. The land has been donated by local authorities, and the RC Sivakasi has drawn up a budget and prepared architectural drawings for the latrine complex. The construction of these latrines will significantly improve the health and hygiene of 600 poor people in India.

199 Cassava Grinders for Cameroon, Cameroon

This project seeks to support the work of International Children's Awareness (ICA) Canada in Cameroon. The ICA is engaged in community development projects, providing clean water, sanitation, and education to help reduce poverty and improve quality of life. The local women's groups with which ICA has worked have identified a great need for motorize cassava grinders as labor-saving device to replace the existing human-powered technology. The Rotary Club of Calgary Olympic will provide funds for the purchase of one such machine this year. Cassava (manioc) is a root crop, high in calories, and easy to cultivate. Originally an American plant, domesticated by the indigenous peoples of South America, it is widely grown in Africa today. While the root is easy to cultivate and preserve, it is labor-intensive to process and make edible.

217 Ghana with Gates, Ghana

Ghana West Africa has a population of 22.9 million, a 20% unemployment rate, 31% of the people live under the poverty line and the life expectancy is 59 years. By providing loan capital to 3,000 women, we will be able to impact the lives of approximately 15,000 individuals.   This new microcredit program in Kasoa, Ghana was identified by Opportunity International, a non-governmental organization operating since 1971 which focuses on microcredit.  The Microcredit Task Force in District 5360 has joined force with San Diego District 5340 to raise $100,000 each. This money raised will then be matched 2:1 with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a grand total of $600,000.

Several clubs in the District have contributed to this project including Red Deer and area clubs, Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake, Rotary Club of Calgary West, and Rotary Club of Sarcee. Rotary Club of Calgary is seeking a matching grant of $25,000 from the Wild Rose Foundation.

118 AFRICANADA School Links Programme, Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone - CAUSE Canada, another Canmore-based NGO, has several aid projects in West Africa and Central America.  We have provided them with $5000 in this Rotary year as seed money, to be triple matched by CIDA, to develop a community educational facility.

19 schools in Canada will be partnered with 19 schools in Sierra Leone. Financial assistance for each African school will purchase books, desks, computers, science and recreational equipment. Five scholarships per school will cover school fees for the poorest students. Cross-cultural commumication with a monthly newsletter and photographs will keep the students in touch. Canadian students will conduct "green" fundraising projects. Sustainable living strategies will be shared with schools in Sierra Leone.

231 San Juan Cosala Orphanage , Mexico

The orphanage is strictly for older chidren and is looked after by Padre Adalberto Macias Liama and one helper. The orphange is in San Juan Cosula a small village near Guadalajara. Our contact person is John D Powell who is a Canadian Rotarian living full time in Mexico.  If you wish to contact him his email is johndpowell@prodigy.net.mx.   We are aware of several clubs in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta who are involved in John Powell's Mexician Projects. In 2008 Rotary Club of Kindersley sent $2500 towards construction and repair costs.  As well 2 of our members have been raising money locally ever month to send to the orphanage so they can buy food. In the last couple months they have raised appx $500.  Right now the children rely heavily on the small local community for any food they can get and as a result the children are not well fed.  The Mexican government provides no assistance to the orphanage in anyway.  The food drive money is raised voluntarily and not as an official Rotary project so none of the monies come from our Rotary accounts. Basically the 2 individuals; Karen Schaitel and Marilyn Rogers are asking friends, co-workers and the like to help feed these poor children.  Marilyn and Ron Rogers recently spent a week at the orphanage and have quite an extensive report and photos. January 2009, several members of the Rotary Club of Kindersley are planning to go to the orphanage.  We are going as a work party to do whatever we can, build, paint etc.  This project has been very important to our members for years and we welcome any Rotarian to join us.  Please contact Marilyn and Ron Rogers at rmrogers@sasktel.net if you would like to be added to our travel party.  More details to follow as plans are finalized.   This information was updated May 12,2008.     dale.worrall@cibc.com

63 Micro-credit / Tsunami Rebuild, Multiple Countries

A cabaret was held in lethbridge in January 2005 to raise funds for the Tsunami rebuilding efforts in Asia. The funds raised from the cabaret are to be matched by D5360 clubs, other funding partners and Opportunity International, the micro-credit organization selected to help in the countries of need.

Funds were donated to Opportunity International, unsure what the status of ur donation would be, ie which country, which community, etc, etc. For everyone's information, you may be aware that there was a recent pplication made to RI for a Microcredit Rotary Action Group. This was approved by the RI Board. PDG Steve Rickard is to be the chair of this RAG.

219 Nilgiris tribal 10-bed hospital, India

Rotarian, Dr. Hans-Henning Mündel was a CUSO-Volunteer as the first Farm Manager in 1966-67 for a 25-family tribal settlement scheme, for the Paniya tribe in the western slopes of the Nilgiri Hills. The Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association (NAWA) is the NGO he worked for; and it is this NAWA which sought contributions towards establishing a 10-bed hospital at the Paniya Colony, with facilities for in-patients and an outpatient section. In the past, the dispensary at the Paniya Colony was only open during the daytime. Patients requiring hospitalization needed to be transported to either Sultans Battery or Calicut, in Kerala State, or to the Kolikarai Hospital of NAWA, which is over 150 km from the Paniya Colony, up the Nilgiri Hills. Very sick patients could not safely be subjected to such arduous journeys. NAWA was able to secure the services of a doctor, Dr. Sriharan, M.B.B.S., the doctor in charge for the existing dispensary since April 2010 to serve the new hospital as its Medical Officer.

Building of hospital: $42,000 raised; first instalment of $5000 sent & received electronically in India in June 2009; second instalment of $10,000 sent to India in Oct.2009; and third instalment of $10,000 sent in Jan. 2010. Last instalment of $17,000 was sent in March, 2010.  July 18th, 2010 was the official inauguration of the "NAWA GOLDEN JUBILEE HOSPITAL, PANIYA FARM".

The other component, of outfitting the hospital for $US 21,600 appears under Project 297, for which TRF Matching Grant #71455 was secured.

67 Basic Dental Services to the poor and under priviliged in Ntinda Parish (county) Uganda, Uganda

The project involves the acquisition of a mobile dental chair and other necessary surgery instruments and enlisting the services of voluntary doctors (but who are facilitated) to visit identified community clinics from where the disadvantaged residents would be invited to come for dental medical examination and treatment on specific days of the week. This is an annual commitment for three years.

Latest update (5th May 2008):

Our 3 year commitment to provide funding for support staff and maintenance of the project has come to an end this Rotary year. Partnering with Cochrane, we each contributed 750.00US over the past 3 years for the ongoing functioning of the dental clinic. Over those three years, Lethbridge East has contributed supplemental equipment and has facilitated in the repair of equipment on at least two occasions. There have been at least 2 visits to the site to my knowledge by Dr. Cahoon and Kalvin Kato to ensure the project's continued success.
I am awaiting confirmation of monies we had sent last month, and a final report from our partner club in Kampala; the Rotary Club of Ntinda. This is the most recent email received by me from Nathan Behagana on May 2....

ear Dr Chuck

I am very sorry for not acknowledging receipt of your mail immmediately. I wanted to inform you after collecting the money . and compiling an update report. I am yet to collect the money .However I wish to you and your Club for your great assistance to this project. We are most grateful.

Greeetings to all

The cost of the hearing aids are approx $300 US. This goal may behard pressed with the news this morning that the Wild Rose Foundation may be cancelled andclosed. This will be a major blow to associations who count on those matching grants for theirprojects.
